New Tiggit Beta RELEASED

The beta release of the new Tiggit is done!

Download & Info: http://tiggit.net/forum/showthread.php?tid=263

As far as looks goes it looks and works pretty much like the old version, but a LOT has changed behind the scenes. Including a new auto-update feature for updating games to the latest version.

Please note: When installing it will want to “import” your existing Tiggit games into a new format (you can choose to not do this though.) Some people have reported problems with this, causing games and savegames to possibly become lost. Please take backup of savegame files etc if they are important!

New Release (and GAMES) Coming SOON!

While it may appear like little has happened with Tiggit over the summer, I’ve actually spent most of the summer rewriting Tiggit from scratch.

It was badly needed too. The old code was outgrowing its (lack of) structure and getting messy to work with. The new rewritten code will not just let me add features faster, it will also be easier for other developers to join in and start tinkering.

Here are some features that are now DONE and will be in the upcoming release:

  • Game updates – games automatically update to the latest version
  • Users now set the game/data install directory
  • No longer requires admin rights to update or fix certain issues
  • Fallback URLs, in case of broken links (downloads are more reliable)
  • Broken/changed links are reported to the server (so we can fix them quickly)
  • Instant startup and more responsive interface

Amazingly, we are still sticking to the plan I posted back in April. Which means we are now nearly done with #3 (game updates), and can move on to the last point: user-added games! I said it was a long term plan :)

I estimate there’s about a week of work before the new version is done, unless some silly bug turns up in last minute testing (I just jinxed it, didn’t I?)

Stay tuned!

What I’m working on next

I posted a short plan in the forums of what I will be working on in the near future.

The most asked for change so far has been to be able to choose where Tiggit and the games are installed. So this is the first thing we will fix. Another popular request is sorting the game list based on date added or number of downloads, and we will also fix that.

I will keep that thread updated with progress as we go along. Or you can just sit back, relax, and let all the sweet changes come to you via the auto-update :)

Forum + Squishing Nasty Bugs!

Wow, it’s been a busy week! Tiggit’s been mentioned on Kotaku, IndieGames, and Reddit (if you know more let me know below!), and in addition we kicked up some dust on Twitter.

Anyway, with more incoming people, questions, suggestions and comments, it’s about time to set up a Tiggit forum. This will be the best place to discuss new features, suggest games or post bug reports and other comments from now on.

I will still answer email of course, but to get a response faster you should check the forums first to see if your question has already been answered.

So for the nasty bug: If you’ve experienced installed games disappearing over the weekend, this has been fixed! This was the result of a broken update intended to fix another bug, and it ended up causing more harm than good. Oh well, that’s what you get when you post a quick untested fix then go away for the entire weekend ;)

Dev Update – Things Are a-Comin’

Just a little heads up about what’s going on.

First off I’ve started a thread at TIGSource about Tiggit. In addition to posting news on this blog I will keep that thread updated with news as well. It might be a good place to post feedback and suggestions, at least until we get a forum of our own.

Secondly, there’s been massive progress recently on a new updater / download backend I have been working on. This is the part of the program that downloads and updates games, images and other information. I wanted something solid and reliable for the future, and that’s what we’re getting. It hasn’t been merged into the main program yet, but it is coming soon. More on this in a later post.

It has taken some time to design this system – that’s why there hasn’t been any news lately – but since it is more or less done now I will have time to do other things again.

Right now I will be adding more games again soon. I’m also contacting more of the guys who made the games we already have. Stay tuned!

Alpha 029 – tags and categories

Just a couple of days after the last release we’re ready with another one.

Games are now sorted by categories and tags. Actually the categories are just special tags: If a game is tagged with “action”, “platform” or any of the other pre-defined category names, they are automatically placed in that category. All other tags are listed below the category list.

Right now you can’t tag the games yourself (the tags are pre-defined), but we’ll fix that in the near future.

Alpha 028 – game rating

After a short break, we’re back with a new release!

New in this release to rate games based on how much you like them or dislike them. The interface is self explanatory: just click the “Rate this game” dropdown box, and choose a rating from a list.

Also, since this is a much more useful way to sort games than alphabetically, games are now sorted by rating by default.

As always, the client will update itself automatically.

Alpha 027 – Pretty Pictures!

So, after a couple days of programming theaded downloads and whatnot, Tiggit finally has screenshots!

It’s still pretty simple: one image per game, maximum size is 300×260. But they load more or less instantly, and they completely change the experience of browsing through the list of games! I’m very satisfied with the result so far.

Here’s a sample of what it looks like (click for larger version):

Enjoy!

Alpha 025 – fixed broken downloads

For some reason, downloads from sourceforge.net suddenly stopped working – and that’s pretty critical since a lot of our games are open source and hosted on SourceForge. Luckily it could be fixed by tweaking an internal downloader option – let’s hope it STAYS fixed.

New in this release is also the context menu and the “Reload Everything” menu option. The context menu is accessed by right-clicking games in the list. The most useful new function you’ll find there is the “Open Location” option, which opens the directory where the game is installed. This is sometimes useful if you need to do some manual setup or fixing in the game directory.

Tons more games

Did I just say we had 112 games in the last post? Well that’s now up to 239, and counting! So we’ve actually DOUBLED the game number in about two weeks. Some of the games are REALLY good too.

Of course, with that many games they can’t all be fantastic. But that’s really part of the point about tiggit. We’re clearly going for a quantity-over-quality deal here. I won’t presume to be the final judge of what is good or not. I think that should be judged by you as the player, and by the community as a whole in democratic fasion.

I will get around to adding features for rating, sorting, categorizing, tagging, reviewing and discovering the cream of the crop soon enough. Those features are easy to add later once things have settled down.
